The secretary-general of the United Nations canceled a scheduled visit to the Middle East, apparently because of the crisis in Iraq. Kofi Annan was due to visit Israel, the Palestinian self-rule areas, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. No new date was announced for his visit.
