The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Michael Chertoff on Tuesday to head the Department of Homeland Security. Chertoff, a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia who is Jewish, ran the Justice Department’s criminal division from 2001 until 2003 and was involved in drafting the U.S. Patriot Act.
