The United Nations secretary-general praised Israel for its years of sharing its environmental expertise, fighting drug trafficking, participating in election-monitoring operations and providing emergency aid to people in crisis. Speaking at a dinner Tuesday honoring Israel’s 50th anniversary as a U.N. member, Kofi Annan said Israel could “do much more” for the United Nation if it were accepted as a member of a regional group, a prerequisite for participation in significant U.N. activities and bodies, including the Security Council.
