On Monday, December 3, the New York Chapter of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, will celebrate Chanukah in the form of a birthday tribute to Miss Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah. Miss Szold, formerly of Baltimore and New York, will become 74 years old on December 21 or, according to the Jewish calendar, December 3.
In fifty homes in all parts of the city women will gather to commemorate the holiday and pay tribute to the Zionist leader, Mrs. Edward Jacobs, national president of Hadassah, will broadcast from Station WEVD and will tell in the course of her speech how Miss Szold’s vision and foresight twenty-five years ago have made the modern work of Hadassah possible.
Similar celebrations in honor of Miss Szold will be held by all 300 chapters of Hadassah during the month.
JEWISH DAY AT THE YULE SALE
The New York State Commission for the Blind holds its annual Christmas Sale at the big banking room at 527 Fifth avenue. Monday is designated as the “Jewish Day” of this sale. Mrs. David E. Goldfarb is chairman of the “Blind Sale” and she will be assisted mornings as well as afternoons by a number of our most prominent women. Only articles made by the blind of New York State will be on sale.
CHANUKAH CELEBRATIONS
The New York City Branch of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America will celebrate Chanukah with a tea at the Hotel Commodore Wednesday.
Mrs. Sol Stroock is honorary chairman, Mrs. Barnett E. Kopelman acting chairman and Mrs. Louis Finkelstein chairman of arrangements.
There will be greetings from Mrs. David de Sola Pool, president of the New York Chapter of Hadassah; Mrs. Gabriel Hamburger, national president of Ivriah; Mrs. Israel Davidson, president of the New York City branch of the Women’s League, and Mrs. Samuel Spiegel, national president of the League.
The Arion String-Quartet will play short compositions, Rabbi Milton Steinberg will address the group and community singing of Hebrew songs will end the celebration.
Special Chanukah observances will be conducted under the auspices of the New York section of the National Council of Jewish Women throughout the Chanukah week.
Chanukah will be celebrated Sunday evening at the Home of the Daughters of Jacob, 167th street and Findlay avenue, the Bronx, by an old-fashioned Chanukah dinner, given by Mrs. Peter J. Schweitzer, president of the Home, and the board of directors.
THEATRE PARTY
The Palestine Lighthouse, of which Mrs. S. D. Friedman is president, has arranged its ninth annual theatre party for its members and friends on Tuesday evening at the Winter Garden. The play to be seen is the amusing review “Life Begins at 8:40.” Mr. Hy Kuchai and Mrs. Samuel D. Friedman are chairmen of the group. Mr. L. Allan Harrison and Mrs. Jennie Siris are in charge of the souvenir journal. Proceeds will be devoted to the support of the organization’s Home for the Blind in Palestine.
The Shaarey Tefila Sisterhood will hold an open meeting in the vestry room of the West End Synagogue, 160 West Eighty-second street, Monday afternoon. Dr. David de Sola Poole will deliver an address on Jewish traditional music which will be illustrated by Cantor Siegfried Phillips. Mrs. Maurice Cohn is president of the Sisterhood.
BORO PARK PARTY
The Boro Park Mizrachi Women’s group will hold a Chanukah party at the home of Mrs. A. Weintraub of 5402 Fifteenth avenue Monday evening. A program embodying the true spirit of Chanukah is being arranged by the chairman, Mrs. Grace Schwartz and a committee consisting of Mrs. Clara Cohen, Mrs. Charlotte Trachtenberg, and Mrs. Leah Goldberg.
PROSPECT PARK BRIDGE
The Prospect Park Chapter of the same organization of which Mrs. Molly Golub is president, plans a bridge December 18. Mrs. Samuel Fasten is chairman of the committee. The group is now actively engaged in preparing for their coming bazaar to be held at an early date.
DRAMATIC SOCIETY OF JAMAICA
Five Jamaica residents, members of the Dramatic Society of the Jamaica Jewish Center, will appear in “Nothing But the Truth,” to be presented by the Dramatic Society of the Seth Low Junior College, Brooklyn, on December 15 at Roerich Hall, Manhattan. They are Joan Probstein, Betty Daviny, Shirley Wolff, Seymour Fischer and Eugene Fischer.
GALA NIGHT
The Women’s Division of Federation sponsors a Gala Carnival Night to be given at the Hotel Pierre December 15. This affair, which is considered among the outstanding events of the season, is directed by Miss Gertrude Harrison, chairman of a large group of patronesses.
Lew Brown’s Casino de Paree revue and stars from his forth-coming musical production, “Calling All Stars,” will be presented and the grand ballroom at Pierre’s will be converted into a theatre accommodating an audience of about a thousand. Arch Selwyn is helping to stage the production. Mrs. Myron Sulzberger will direct a Fashion Show which follows the revue.
Supper will be served from twelve to two, and Meyer Davis’ orchestra will furnish the music. Miss Susan Wimpfheimer is chairman of the decorating committee. Tickets per couple are $11. Proceeds will be devoted to activities of the women’s division of Federation.
More than eight hundred women will participate in the afternoon tea and bridge to be given by the Sisterhood of the Israel Orphan Asylum on board the Saturnia, Thursday afternoon.
