Three Israel medical teams dispatched to the Congo last week have begun working in and around Leopoldville, according to reports received here today.
The largest group has been assigned to manage the 650-bed Kitambo Hospital in Leopoldville. A smaller group has been put in charge of the Leopoldville municipal Sanitation Department while a third unit is at work in the Institute of Tropical Diseases in that city.
A party of Jewish refugees from Elisabethville arrived here today via Rhodesia with virtually no possessions other than the clothes they were wearing. Jacob Shalom, who owned a grocery store in the Katanga capital, said that after his store was burned by rioters, he fled to Rhodesia along with many other white refugees. He said there were about 1,000 Jewish refugees from the Congo to Salisbury
Among the arrivals here was an Israeli-born woman, Mrs. Godona Ben Atar who married and emigrated to the Congo seven years ago. She came with her two infant children in her arms. All of the newcomers said they were ready to do whatever work was given them and that many of the other Jewish refugees were considering settling in Israel.
