L. Gurevite Samuel Saruk and Joseph Flantzman, who were arrested in Noevo Laredo, Mexico, for conducting services on the High Holidays in a private home, were ordered released by Secretary of State Tejeda.
Nuevo Laredo has no synagogue and the three Jews, with 11 others gathered at the home of a Jewish resident of Nuevo Laredo to hold New York services.
In the midst of the service four Mexican immigration officials entered and placed the three Jews who were leading the service under arrest.
Jews at Laredo, learning of the arrest, appealed to the embassy at Mexico City. The embassy refused to intervene.
