A large contingent of British troops has arrived in Palestine within the last few days and huge camps are being erected in the southwestern outskirts of Jerusalem.
Shots were exchanged this evening between guards patrolling the fortified center of the city, where government buildings are located, and several men in a passing car. The police opened fire when a parcel was thrown from the vehicle. Sirens were sounded and bomb experts were summoned to deal with the package.
The Haganah radio today warned the extremist groups that the Jewish community would not surrender to terror, nor to propaganda, such as the incident at Rehovoth yesterday when the Irgun invaded a cinema and flashed slogans on the screen. The broadcast charged, at the same time, that the police had “received hints” from their superiors to fire even on youngsters who are just distributing leaflets. “This is possible only in a police state,” it charged, “this is murder.”
The Irgun radio last night appealed to all delegates to the Zionist Congress to set up a provisional Jewish government with its own army during the Congress deliberations. It warned the delegates against accepting partition.
