President Truman yesterday paid high tribute to the war record of Jewish men and women who served in the armed forces during World War II, in a message to the 52nd annual Memorial Services of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States. The religious services in Temple Emanu-El were preceded by a parade down Fifth Avenue in which some 5,000 veterans participated.
Declaring that the J.W.V. services “offer a solomn reminder of the sacrifices which have been made by all our people, of every race and creed, in defense of the beliefs by which we live,” President Truman said “that like all Americans who fought and died for victory, Jewish men and women in our armed forces sought peace which would bring tolerance and good will throughout the world.” The President expressed the hope that today, “as free men and women,” we would “renew our efforts to achieve peace and justice and brotherhood under God for all peoples.”
Messages were also sent by Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson, Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, Army Chief of Staff Dwight D. Eisenhower and a number of military and naval leaders. Speakers at the services included Sen. Owen Brewster of Maine, Mayor William O’Dwyer, J.W.V. National Commander Milton H. Richman and Dr. Sanuel Goldenson, rabbi of Temple Emanu-El.
