Truman Receives A.D.L. Annual Award in White House Ceremony; Pledges Civil

President Truman was presented with "America’s Democratic Legacy Medallion" by the Anti-Defamation league of B’nai B’rith at the White House shortly after noon today. The President said he was happy to accept the award.Meier Steinbrink New York State Suprome Court Justice and chairman of the A.D.L., who made the presentation, pledged to the President the support of B’nai B’rith in his civil rights stand. Steinbrink asked the President not to lose courage or faith in his program to insure civil rights for all Americans.

In his letter to the A.D.L. accepting the award, President Truman wrote: "I am genuinely grateful to have been selected as the recipient of the America’s Democratic Legacy Award, given annually by your distinguished organization, the Anti-Defamation League of the B’nai B’rith."I am aware of the vigorous educational program and the practical efforts by Jewish organizations to foster an understanding of democratic rights and responsibility. Your definition of America’s democratic legacy is admirable. It is indeed a f#### in the hearts and minds of the people. Our goal should be the protection and ####ty that can be given all our people under a civil rights program designed to ##### thinness of our times. Such a program I have placed before Congress. In the effort to have it translated into law, I shall look forward to the support of organizations such as yours."
