Prime Minister Israel Inonu personally denied today reports that he was planning to impose a new “wealth” tax on Jews and other national minorities of the type he had promulgated 20 years ago. The old “Wealth” tax known as the “Varlik tax, ” resulted in ruining the economic position of many Jews in Turkey.

Reports about Premier Inonu’s plans for a revival of the “wealth” tax had been spread by political opponents trying to hamper his effort to form a new coalition government. Mr. Inonu broadcast over the Turkish radio network a statement categorically denying such “unfounded reports.”
