The status of the Jewish Communal Councils in Turkey, as well as the status of various assets owned by the Turkish Jewish community in land and buildings, were discussed here with top Government leaders today by Turkey’s Chief Rabbi David Asseo. He met at Ankara with President Cemal Gursel, Prime Minister Ismet Inonu, and other top Government leaders. It was the new Chief Rabbi’s first courtesy visit to the leaders of Turkey.
The Chief Rabbi described the talks with the leaders as friendly and useful. He said President Gursel conveyed to the Turkish Jewish community a message of affection and good wishes, and that Premier Inonu told him the Government was ready to cooperate in solving problems of the Jewish community.
The Chief Rabbi was accompanied by a delegation of advisers and Jewish lay leaders. In addition to the President and the Premier, the delegation conferred with Ahmet Tepaleglu, Minister of the Interior; Ministers of State Avni Dogan, Necmi Oktem, Nihat Su and Turham Fevzioglu; and officials of the Department of Religious Affairs.
