Israeli officials reported today two new border incidents in one of which three infiltrators from Lebanese territory clashed with an Israeli patrol last night in Upper Galilee. After an exchange of fire the marauders fled back into Lebanon, leaving behind a plastic container filled with explosives. Israel complained to the Mixed Armistice Commission.
In the other incident, infiltrators coming from the Hebron hills area in Jordan tried yesterday to blow up a culvert on the Dvir-Lahav road in the Lachish area. The culvert, located about five miles from the Jordanian border, was not damaged.
The Israeli delegation walked out of a meeting of the Israeli-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission yesterday in a largely symbolic gesture of protest. The walkout took place when it was learned that Jordanian workers were doing some work in the building where the meeting took place.
The Israelis left the session because the armistice agreement provides that both countries must approve any changes in the building before they can be made. The gesture was symbolic in that it was understood that the Israelis will return to the MAC sessions at a later date. After the walkout, the Commission criticized Israel for allegedly making changes without Jordan’s approval, in the Mandelbaum Gate which separates Israel-held new Jerusalem from Jordan-held old Jerusalem.
