Agencies of the United Jewish Appeal extended full or partial immigration, settlement and rehabilitation assistance during the first three months of 1951 to more than 485,000 Jews in Israel, Europe, North Africa and the Near East, it was reported today by Edward M.M. Warburg, U.J.A. General Chairman.
Mr. Warburg reported also that the constituent agencies of the United Jewish Appeal–the United Palestine Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee and United Service for New Americans–earmarked a total of $42,492,000 from January 1 through March 31 for settlement and absorption of homeless Jews arriving in Israel, for relief and welfare services in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and for refugee aid in the United States.
The U.J.A. General Chairman urged in his quarterly report that campaign chairman and executives throughout the country accelerate their local drives this spring “so that the United Jewish Appeal can keep pace with mounting demands for emergency large scale funds.” He pointed out that in the first quarter of the year “there was an unbalance between the United Jewish Appeal’s cash income and the sums budgeted for urgent programs in Israel and other parts of the world.”
