Final preparations were announced today by the national United Jewish Appeal for its two day National Leadership Conference on Education which will open at the Biltmore Hotel here next Thursday. More than 300 top American Jewish leaders from all over the United States will attend the conference, at which the Israel Education Fund, UJA’s newest program of vital absorption aid to Israel’s immigrants, will be presented;
The Israel Education Fund program, based on recommendations made by the mission of American educators, will be presented by Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. Details of a multi-million dollar, five-year plan, designed to meet Israel’s current and critical education needs will be announced. They will include provision for additional major high school construction, student and teacher-training scholarships and cultural enrichment programs.
The unbalanced and shortage-ridden secondary education situation in Israel has been termed by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol a “grave peril to our future.” A report on a UJA mission to Israel of prominent American educators to study the problem at first hand will be presented to the conference by Dr. Harold B. Gores, president of Education Facilities Laboratories, Ford Foundation. The mission included Commissioner Charles J, Bensley former member of the Board of Education, New York City; Dr. William Jansen, former Superintendent of Schools in New York City and Dr. Howard Wilson, Dean of the School of Education of the University of California in Los Angeles.
Joseph Meyerhoff, UJA’s general chairman, will preside as chairman of the conference; Highlighting the opening dinner session will be an address by Abba Eban, the Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Education in Israel, The featured speaker at the closing session on Friday will be Francis Keppel, United States Commissioner of Education, Edward M. M. Qarburg, member of the New York Board of Regents, will open the luncheon meeting.
