To provide urgently needed funds for the immediate and large-scale transfer to Israel of Jews from Iraq, Roumania, Tripolitania and other Eastern European and Moslem countries, the national campaign cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal has designated Sunday, October 8th as National “C” Day (C for Cash) to mobilize millions of dollars in cash, it was announced this week-end by Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman. More than 60,000 volunteers are now being recruited in communities from coast to coast to make personal visits to approximately 700,000 contributors, Mr. Morgenthau said.
He also announced that Eddie Cantor has been named national chairman for “C” Day. Mr. Cantor, who visited Israel two months ago, has had a leading role in the nationwide drive. In describing the circumstances which prompted the inauguration of the extraordinary one-day collection drive known as National “C” Day, Mr. Morgenthau said: “The 1950 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal is making encouraging progress. However, the remittance of cash on pledges which were made earlier this year has not kept pace with the urgently pressing needs involving the rescue of tens of thousands of Jews from Moslem and Eastern European countries.”
