An Israel Government spokesman, commenting on the U.N. Conciliation Commission’s plan for an international regime for Jerusalem, which was made public yesterday, said that although the scheme “differs in several aspects from earlier proposals for internationalization of Jerusalem the plan nevertheless adheres to concepts which experience and reality have proven impracticable.”
The spokesman asserted that the Commission’s proposal ignores the fundamental problems of sovereignty. “Without a positive solution to this problem, no stable regime tan be set up in Jerusalem,” he stated, adding that the “plan also contains a number of proposals which Israel and the Jews of Jerusalem cannot possibly accept.” The spokesman said the Israel Government would reply in full to the Commission’s proposal when it comes before the General Assembly.
“The Government of Israel continues to adhere to the proposals for resolving the Jerusalem problem submitted by the Israel representative before the Ad Hoc Political Committee of the U.N. Assembly in May,” the spokesman declared. “These proposals assure full satisfaction for the rights and vital interests of all religions and churches without detriment to the basic interests of the state of Israel and Jerusalem’s Jews. The Israel Government persists in its views that any settlement of the Jerusalem issue which in any degree severs Jewish Jerusalem from the state of Israel is devoid of reality,” he said.
