U.n.e.f. Commander Suffers Stroke; Thant Reports Him in Serious Condition

Major General Flores Paiva Chaves, commander of the United Nations Emergency Force, which stands on guard at the Gaza Strip border with Israel and at Sharm el-Sheikh, overlooking the Gulf of Akaba, is in “very serious” condition in a hospital at Beirut, as a result of a stroke, Secretary-General U Thant announced here today.

General Chaves was stricken Tuesday night, while vacationing in the Lebanese capital, Mr. Thant said. The UNEF commander is a Brazilian. Mr. Thant expressed deep concern over the general’s condition.
