An Austrian Embassy spokesman said today that the State Department has so far communicated nothing to the Embassy pertaining to the State Department’s expression of agreement with Sen. Herbert H. Lehman as to the “wisdom” of concluding a satisfactory Jewish claims agreement before the Austrian state treaty is presented to the U.S. Senate for ratification.

Sen. Lehman informed the Senate a few days ago of receipt of a letter in which Thruston B. Morton, Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs told of the Department’s view. Mr. Morton said this view “has already been made known to the Austrian Government both here and in Vienna; and I hope that it will contribute to progress toward a satisfactory agreement during the negotiations which are going on in Vienna between the Austrian Government and the Jewish organizations.”

Austrian press attache H.B. Thalberg said that while the Embassy “hopes for an early settlement that would be mutually agreeable” to the Austrian Government and the Jewish organizations absolutely nothing has been communicated to Austria by the State Department here along the lines described in Mr. Morton’s letter.
