U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft was criticized for attending an event with a preacher who called United States a “Christian nation.” Ashcroft praised D. James Kennedy after the televangelist said, “As Christians we should prefer and select Christians to rule over us.” Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State said, “Ashcroft’s failure to repudiate Kennedy’s bigoted version of America is appalling.”
