United States sources at United Nations headquarters here today denied an announcement in Cairo by United Arab Republic Foreign Minister Mahmoud Fawzi that the United States had officially assured Cairo that Israel would discontinue its excavations in the Lake Huleh region opposite the Syrian border

These sources asserted that Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., the American delegate to the UN, had repeated to Mordecai Kidron, deputy permanent representative of Israel here, and Zaki Kenawi, the UAR alternate delegate, the same urgings of restraint and moderation which American diplomatic personnel in the Middle East had pressed on Jerusalem and Cairo. Other than that, these United States sources said, there had been no commitment.

In his announcement in Cairo today, Mr. Fawzi had stated that Mr. Lodge delivered “assurances” of an Israeli halt in drainage canal digging to Mr. Kenawi at the United Nations.
