A report on the current relations between the United States and Israel was made today by Ambassador Abba Eban at a session of the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Foreign Affairs. Mrs. Golda Myerson, the new Israel Foreign Minister reported to the committee on the foreign situation.
Mr. Eban reported on his latest talks with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and on the chances of Israel’s securing action from the State Department on its application to purchase American arms. The Israel Ambassador also reported in detail on the latest session of the United Nations Security Council at which the Arabs scored a victory by forcing the Western Powers to bow to their demand that the phrase dealing with “mutually accepted” Arab-Israel peace be dropped from the resolution.
Premier David Ben Gurion was criticized at the session for having stated in Parliament last week that Dr. Peretz Bernstein, leader of the General Zionists, advocated preventive war against Jordan, in a speech to this committee. The criticism of the Premier was voiced by Herut deputy Menahem Beigin, who pointed out that committee members were enjoined to secrecy.
Mr. Beigin argued that if Premier Ben Gurion could “leak” information about committee matters, no other members could be held to secrecy. Meir Argov, Mapai chairman of the committee, agreed with the Herut leader. It was decided to call on Mr. Ben Gurion, as Defense Minister, to explain his conduct at a Knesset session next week.
