Before he sailed for Europe yesterday aboard the steamship Manhattan, James G. McDonald, League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, issued a farewell message congratulating the Jews of America for their efforts in behalf of Jewish refugees from Germany.
Mr. McDonald’s statement, addressed to Felix M. Warburg, national chairman of the German Jewish relief effort, expressed confidence that the United Jewish Appeal, which already has reached the half-way mark in its drive for $3,000,000, will raise its full quota.
HIS PARTING MESSAGE
The High Commissioner’s message to Mr. Warburg and to the Jews of America follows in part:
“A few months ago, when I learned of the decision of the American Joint Distribution Committee and of the American Palestine Campaign of the Jewish Agency for Palestine to join hands in an effort to raise an adequate fund for the relief of their German brethren, I said:
“‘Once more, as so frequently throughout their long, heroic and tragic history, the Jews are showing their willingness to make generous sacrifices on behalf of their fellow Jews.’
“Close contact with the United Jewish Appeal during the few weeks I have been at home has shown me the extent to which the Jews of America have accepted their responsibility.”
After remarking that achievement of the United Jewish Appeal’s goal would prove to the Jews of Germany throughout the world that they may rely on their brothers in this country, Mr. McDonald concludes with the wish that “my fellow Christians would follow the example set by the Jews of America, for the principles involved in the tragedy of the German refugees are universal.”
$21,000 GIVEN AT DINNER
The cotton goods division of the Appeal announced yesterday that it had raised $21,000 toward the fund at a dinner Tuesday night at the Harmonie Club, 4 East Sixtieth street.
Lawrence Marx, a co-chairman of the division with Sidney Scheuer and Sigmund Seiferheld, presided at the dinner and spoke, Other speakers were Ira M. Younker, co-chairman of the New York drive, Magistrate Jonah J. Goldstein, Samuel C. Lamport and Mr. Scheuer.
