The United States may support the candidacy of Foreign Minister Charles Malik of Lebanon for the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly when the assembly meets in September.
The question of backing Malik is being weighed here with a view to advancing the American position in the Arab world and with the Afro-Asian bloc. Lebanon has moved toward the United States since the Suez Crisis and has adhered to the Eisenhower Doctrine.
Sir Leslie Munro, Ambassador of New Zealand, had previously announced his candidacy for the General Assembly presidency. He is favored by Israel.
