The United States may soon initiate an arrangement with Israel to train Israeli naval personnel, it was learned today. Other military training facilities may also soon be afforded to Israel. Specific programs pending since before the Sinai campaign caused a freeze may be opened shortly.
Sherman Adams, the Assistant to the President, said in a communication from the White House to chairman Hubert Humphrey of a Senate subcommittee on Near Eastern affairs today that the U.S. Defense Department has been authorized to consider Israeli requests. This would cover requests for specialized training courses and visits to U.S. military installations on the basis that existed prior to comment of hostilities last fall.
Sen, Humphrey, a Minnesota Democrat, first discussed the question of U. S. military training for Israelis when he was in Israel recently on a Near Eastern mission. He took the matter up with the U.S. Ambassador and the American military attache. On his return to Washington, Sen. Humphrey brought the issue to Secretary of State Dulles. More recently he discussed it personally with President Eisenhower. The Adams communication is believed to result from the discussion Sen. Humphrey held with the President.
