An atomic powered seawater desalination and electric generating plant to be built in Israel as a joint project of Israel and the United States will not be ready until 1975, but will have an electric output of 300 megawatts, 50 percent greater than originally planned, James Ramey, member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, said here last night. Mr. Ramey, who stopped here for discussions of the project with Prime Minister Eshkol and members of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, was enroute to Teheran. He departed last night.
He said that the atomic plant, which will be the second largest of its kind in the world, will have a desalting capacity of 100 million gallons of water per day. It was originally supposed to go into operation in 1973. Mr. Ramey noted that there are to be further discussions between the U.S. and Israel Governments as to how the project will be implemented. “I don’t think that the discussions between the governments have gotten to the matter of financing yet,” he said.
