Jewish Federations throughout the country were asked today to grant financial support to Yeshivoth, in a resolution adopted at the closing session of the three-day national convention of Agudath Israel of America.
The 1,000 delegates also adopted a series of resolutions aiming at inspiring a deeper sense of commitment to religious Judaism among the Jewish masses, and instilling among Orthodox Jews an aroused awareness of the necessity of taking an independent Orthodox position on Jewish events “without bowing to the whims of a dominating secular Jewish leadership.”
Rabbi Shlomo Lorincz, a member of Israel’s Parliament, who flew directly to the conclave in order to report on the recent elections in Israel, declared that “without a basic change in the Government’s policies on religious issues, ” he sees no likelihood of Agudath Israel joining the new coalition cabinet that will be formed.
The convention elected a five-man presidium, consisting of Rabbis Moshe Feinstein, Mordechai S. Friedman, Benjamin W. Hendeles, Moshe Horowitz and Chaskel Besser, Michael G. Tress was reelected administrative president, and Rabbi Morris Sherer executive vice-president.
