Construction started today of a center in Jerusalem to be known as Kiryat Mattersdorf–a 400-unit housing project for Orthodox settlers mainly from the United States.
The center, which will have a synagogue, yeshiva, home for the aged, kindergarten and a commercial area, was developed by Rabbi Shmuel Ehrenfeld, the scion of the famous Chasan Sofer, who lived in Mattersdorf, the center of seven Jewish communities in the Burgenland district in Austria before the Nazis occupied the country.
Rabbi Ehrenfeld, who escaped from the Nazi clutches at almost the last moment and came to New York, was expected to settle at the new center with the first immigrants. Various sections of the new center will be named for the seven former Mattersdorf communities.
