U.S. praises Knesset vote

The United States welcomed the vote in Israel’s Parliament authorizing an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. “We certainly welcome the steps that move toward the implementation of this plan,” State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Wednesday, a day after the Knesset vote. “We think it offers an opportunity, and we’ve long expressed our support for the disengagement plan, that involves settlements in Gaza and four settlements on the West Bank that we think can represent a real opportunity for progress for the Palestinians and progress along the lines of the ‘road map’ ” peace plan.
