Two Democratic Senators who last fall visited both Israel and Jordan declared on the floor of the Senate last night that Arab-Israel problems should not be relegated by the next President of the United States to the Vice President.
Senator Albert Gore, of Tennessee, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s subcommittee on the Middle East, said that the Israel issue should not be passed on to Henry Cabot Lodge, Republican nominee for the Vice Presidency. Vice President Richard M. Nixon announced last week that, if elected, he wilt delegate Mr. Lodge to assume “primary responsibility” for Arab-Israel negotiations.
Senator Gale W, McGee, Tennessee Democrat, took the same stand in regard to Mr. Lodge. Senator Gore said Mr. Lodge had “failed to provide positive and effective Middle Eastern policy for the last eight years.” Senator Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, replied, terming Mr. Lodge a “distinguished and great diplomat,” and saying he thought “Mr. Nixon has made the right decision.”
