A two-day conference on Science and Technology for the Peaceful Development of Israel and the Middle East will open Saturday at the Hotel Statler here. Nearly 500 scientists, engineers and technical experts will review problems common to all countries in the Middle East.

Sponsored by the American Technion Society, the Conference will be devoted to four major areas of study. These are: 1. The Development of Energy Sources; 2. The Conservation of Soil and Water; 3. Planning for Industrial Development; 4. Planning for Social Development.

The conference hopes to formulate a series of concrete recommendations for the use of all countries in the Middle East which will take advantage of recent technological and scientific discoveries, and which will “accelerate the peaceful growth of this ancient center of civilization. “

David Rose, president of the Society–a nationwide group composed of nearly 15, 000 engineers and industrialists–emphasized that the only “sure way to establish permanent peace and tranquility in the Middle East is to expand the benefits of technology and to widen the inter-change of scientific knowledge among the people of that key region of the world. “
