U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright urged American Jewish leaders to help her convince Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept an American proposal for an Israeli redeployment in the West Bank. In a conference call last friday to the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Albright also warned that the United States might withdraw from the peace process unless progress is made soon. Albright, who initiated the 30- minute call and asked the leaders to keep the telephone consultation private, stressed that as a friend of the United States, Israel should accept the American ideas for moving the peace process forward.
