The United States Government is doing “everything possible to impress the gravity of the situation” on Israel and Egypt, the State Department said today. The United States is fully supporting U.N. efforts to secure a cease-fire agreement, it was declared.
Before leaving Washington today on vacation, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said he had “strong hopes” that the Israel-Egypt fighting will subside and a cease-fire prevail. He said he knew of no “new overtures” by the State Department to bring Arab-Israel peace.
Under-Secretary of State Herbert Hoover, Jr., said this afternoon that “our latest information leads us to be hopeful that some basis can be found whereby they (Israelis and Egyptians) will engage in cease-fire talks.” The Acting Secretary in the absence of Mr. Dulles added that his peace hopes were based on the activities of truce supervisor Maj. Gen. E. L. M. Burns.
