Frank R. Lautenberg, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, announced today that in spite of the latest terrorism in Jerusalem, the UJA is launching its most ambitious mission program to Israel to date. Referring to last Friday’s terrorist bomb blast in Jerusalem, Lautenberg said “No provocation, however cruel and cowardly, will deter us. This outpouring for missions is in itself a defiant celebration of the sanctity of Jewish life.”
The UJA announced that there are already ‘250 Jewish leaders going on the Prime Minister’s Mission to Israel in August. More than 300 community leaders have signed up for the annual study conference in October and there are over 400 reservations in the Young Leadership Cabinet’s “Koach” mission Nov. 6-16 which is aiming for 1000 participants. During September, October and November there will be over 50 community missions to Israel as part of the UJA’s overseas mission program, the UJA said.
Meanwhile, UJA headquarters reported receiving a cable from the Family Mission of its Young Leadership Cabinet presently in Israel, composed of 23 families with over 63 children, who reported that they were well and undeterred by the bombing in Jerusalem. Their message said: “We grieve to hear that Jerusalem has been defiled by terrorists. We are well and strong and all the more resolved that we stand as one with our people. After four days of the mission, we can only say that as one mission family, we have deepened beyond all measure, the meaning of our lives.”
