A pension program designed to provide adequate annuities for the rabbis of the Reform congregations throughout the United States was adopted today at a round table conference of rabbis and presidents of congregations, meeting as part of the 38th Council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations here.
The council, which is being attended by more than 2,000 delegates and visitors, was opened this morning by Robert P. Goldman, president of the UAHC. The opening session was marked by an address by Adolph Rosenberg, chairman of the executive board of the UAHC, who reviewed the activities of the organization during the past year, and by the presentation to the delegates of Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath, newly appointed executive director of the UAHC. Justice Meir Steinbrink of the New York State Supreme Court was elected president of the council.
A symposium on the “Pillars of Our Faith” was addressed by Henry Monsky, president of B’nai B’rith, Rabbi Leon Fram of Detroit and Rabbi Alexander Steinbach of Brooklyn. Mr. Monsky stressed the role of charity as an important phase of religion which promotes social consciousness. The plight of the Jews in Europe makes the role of charity doubly important at the present time, Mr. Monsky stated, Rabbi James G. Heller, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, addressed a special religious conclave of the council at Temple Emanu-El tonight.
Meeting concurrently with the UAHC is the 15th biennial session of the Federation of Temple Sisterhoods. Chief discussion at today’s sessions dealt with “The Family in Time of War” and the sisterhood’s war activities.
