The United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York campaign for 1955 has passed the $21,000,000 mark, its treasurer, Samuel D. Leidesdorf, told a luncheon meeting of 200 of its leading volunteers today. He reported that, despite July’s record-breaking hot weather, volunteer workers had performed the remarkable feat of raising $1,000,000 during the month, principally by telephone calls to contributors.
Governor Averell Harriman, in his first public appearance since returning yesterday from a month-long tour of Europe and Israel, reported his observations of UJA-financed programs of aid for refugee newcomers to Israel and Jews in areas of danger and need overseas. The Governor inspected a number of these activities during his trip abroad, particularly during a four-day visit to Israel.
In Israel, he said, it was “inspiring” to see how the people had” made a garden out of the country.” Prime Minister Moshe Sharett and Defense Minister David Ben-Gurion, he added are “dedicated to development of Israel and to work for peace” in the country’s present borders.
