The United Nations Committee on Refugees and Displaced Persons will take careful note of the Anglo-American inquiry committee’s recommendations, Chairman Hector McNeil, who is British Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs said today.
Queried by a reporter as to whether the U.N. committee will take into account the special needs of the Jewish refugees, McNeil said he greatly hoped that the committee would not draw any destinations of this kind.
The committee, he said, would have its report ready for presentation to the U.N. Social and Economic Council by May 20, but no date has been fixed for a final solution of the problem of the refugees and displaced persons. Such a solution must be found before Europe can return to normalcy, he added.
The committee will conclude its general debate tomorrow, after which two sub-committees, one of which will draft a constitution for the body to be set up by the U.N. to handle refugee problems and the other of which is charged with “fact finding,” will begin work.
