An urgent call was issued today to more than 400 Jewish communities throughout the country for delegates to attend a special “Conference in a Crisis” sponsored by the United Palestine Appeal, October 22-23, Shoreham Hotel, Washington, Judge Morris Rothenberg, U.P.A. acting national chairman, announced.
Emphasizing that the “presence of more than 70,000 Jewish immigrants in the squalid misery of the transition camps, facing the rainy season, constitutes an extremely critical situation for Israel,” Judge Rothenberg declared; “Every man, woman and child suffering in the camps presents a direct challenge to every Jew in this country. The U.P.A. ‘s forthcoming conference will be confronted with the responsibility of devising procedures and techniques for meeting this challenge and overcoming it.”
The principal speakers at the conference will include: Eliahu Elath, Israel ambassador to the United States: General Lucius D. Clay, former military governor of the American zone of Germany; General John H. Hilldring, formerly member of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. Herbert H. Lehman, former governor of New York; Henry Morgenthau, general chairman of the $250,000,000 U.J.A.; Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency; Daniel Frisch, president of the Zionist Organization of America; Mrs. Rose Halprin, president of Hadassah; Hayim Greenberg, member of the World Zionist Executive; Charles Ress, president of the Palestine Foundation Fund and Baruch Zuckerman, president of the Labor Zionist Organization.
