The United Synagogue of America, national organization of 500 Conservative congregations, today opened its biennial convention at the Willard Hotel here “to explore new frontiers for Jewish living” in the United States. More than 800 delegates are attending the convention. Tomorrow, a delegation from the organization will call on President Truman at the White House.
Judge Simon H. Rifkind, chairman of the national convention committee, said that a plan evolved from the results of the Survey of Synagogue Life conducted by the United Synagogue in cooperation with Columbia University will be presented to the convention. The convention will discuss the “reaching of the unaffiliated, the relationship between the rabbi and congregation, making the synagogue a social center, financing the congregation,” and various other problems.
