A branch of the United Synagogue of America, the central organization of the conservative type of Jewish congregations, will be established in Chicago, to revitalize Orthodox Judaism and to carry its message into the rural communities and colleges in the Mid-West. This was decided at the final session of the Mid-West Branch convention of the United Synagogue of America at Hotel Sherman here yesterday.

A quota of $187,000 was assigned to the thirteen Mid-West States as their portion of the half million dollars needed to erect the synagogue center in Jerusalem. The tentative quotas proposed the previous day were adopted.

The Five Million Dollar United Palestine Appeal was enthusiastically endorsed.

Thomas Piser of Chicago was unanimously elected president of the United Synagogue Mid-West Branch. The Women’s League elected Mrs. Benjamin Davis as honorary president and Mrs. Lilly Geldspan as acting president, both of Chicago.

Resolutions passed by the Convention condemned the proposed enrollment of aliens as “foreign to the American spirit of freedom and the pursuit of liberty and happiness.”

Other resolutions called for the arrangement of the school day to provide for religious education outside of school and after school hours. Rabbi Samuel M. Cohen, national director of the United Synagogue of America, declared the celebration of Christmas in public schools, as unconstitutional and an affront to Americar Jews. “The tendency has been to Christianize everything in America,” he said, “from schools to government, and propaganda is responsible for the encroachment of Christianity in schools.”
