Meir Avizohar, an independent MK, called today for a Knesset debate on government policies and operations in the administered territories. Avizohar was the only MK so far to respond to Defense Minister Moshe Dayan’s recent urging that Israel’s parliament play a bigger role in the affairs of the territories.
In a letter to Knesset Speaker Yisrael Yeshayahu, Avizohar observed that the chamber never discussed the territories in the past despite the fact that security secrets were not involved and that the issues were widely debated in party and public forums. He noted that the Labor Party is presently engaged in a top level debate over future policies in the territories. Avizohar resigned last year from the State List faction. He was formerly associated with Dayan’s Rafi wing of the Labor Party.
