Acting on an appeal by Dutch civic leaders, the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League Friday urged Samuel Untermyer, its president, to take an active part in the defense of the Dutch carpenter, Herr Spansier, who was imprisoned a year ago by Nazi authorities while on a visit to the German frontier town of Cleve.

In an appeal to the League asking for Mr. Untermyer’s assistance, the Netherlands Bureau to Boycott German Merchandise declares that Spansier was charged with exposing “the safety of the German Reich to danger” because he had helped circulate in Holland a few copies of the newspaper called the Freie Presse, conducted by the refugees.

Ezekiel Rabinowitz, secretary of the League, cabled to Germany and Holland for complete details of the case after a conference with Mr. Untermyer. Mr. Untermyer said that if necessary he would go to Europe after studying the international complications of the case.
