President-elect John F. Kennedy announced here last night that he has appointed the next Vice President, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, as chairman of the Committee on Governmental Contracts.
Mr. Kennedy said he has given Mr. Johnson a directive to end racial, religious and other discrimination in the employment of all contractors who provide products and services to the Federal Government. The Committee on Governmental Contracts, with the same aims, was established by President Eisenhower in 1953. Vice President Richard M. Nixon has been chairman of the committee in the outgoing Administration.
The Committee is authorized to make recommendations for ending discriminatory practices by contractors selling to or serving the Government, to receive complaints about such discriminations, to further educational programs toward ending such discriminations, and to maintain liaison with governmental and non-governmental bodies to assist in eliminating the basic causes of discrimination in employment.
