The resolution adopted by the international congress of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals which concluded its sessions here yesterday constitutes a direct attack on the schechita, the mode of slaughtering animals for food as prescribed by the Jewish religion.
The text of the resolution now made available shows that the congress went on record as asking the enactment of laws prohibiting “any method of slaughter without previous stunning of the animal.”
A compromise resolution, offered by the French delegate Lespine, proposing that the societies work for the introduction of a humane method of slaughtering, was defeated inasmuch as the majority of the delegates were enraged against the schechita by the violent attacks and false accusations pounded during the last few days of the congress by the anti-Semitic spokesmen.
Surprise was expressed today in Austrian Jewish circles at the fact that the President of the Austrian Republic, Micklas, had accepted the post of honorary patron of the congress, and that Mgr. Seipel, former President Hainisch and Schober, known for their friendly attitude toward the Jewish population, had agreed to be honorary members of the praesidium, without being assured that the congress would refrain from an attack on Judaism.
