War-time revitalization of small Jewish communities resulting from the bringing together of small groups of adjacent Jewish communities for service to military camps under the aegis of the National Jewish Welfare Board has led to a growing desire on the part of these communities for permanent organized Jewish community service, Benjamin Rabinowitz, director of the Jewish Center Division of the JWB, today told the annual meeting of the Jewish Center Division Committee.
In response to this demand, JWB has set up a new service to help such communities unite for a community center and youth program, for religious and Jewish education purposes, and for joint action for national and local welfare needs, Mr. Rabinowitz reported. Such experimental projects are under way in four areas, he revealed; in Louisiana for the communities of Alexandria, Leesville, Monroe, St. Charles and Baton Rouge; in the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia; in Connecticut, for joint service to the towns of Ansonia, Shelton, Derby and Seymour; and for a cluster of communities adjacent to Kingston, N.Y.
Philip M. Klutznick, who has been active in Jewish youth-serving organizations, was named chairman of the Jewish Center Division Committee.
