Warburg Departs from U.S. to Study Needs of Jews in Various European Countries

Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, today departed for Europe to make a first-hand survey of the relief, rehabilitation and resettlement needs of the Jewish survivors there.

Mr. Warburg will investigate the present situation of the Jews in Poland, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Italy and France, and the operations of the Joint Distribution Committee in their behalf. He has undertaken this special European mission in order to present an eye-witness report to the national conference of American Jewish leaders which will be held under the auspices of the United Jewish Appeal from Nov. 30th to Dec. 2nd in the Hotel Ambassador in Atlantic City.

MRS. LEVY, HEAD OF U.J.A. WOMEN’S DIVISION, NAMED “JEWISH WOMAN OF YEAR”

Mrs. David M. Levy, chairman of the National Women’s Division of the United Jewish Appeal, has been named “The Jewish Woman of the Year” by the National Council of Jewish Women for “the most notable contribution to human welfare during 1946,” it was announced yesterday by Mrs. Joseph N. Welt, of Detroit, president of the National Council of Jewish Women.

Under Mrs. Levy’s leadership, the Women’s Division of the U.J.A. mobilized more than 300,000 Jewish women throughout the country in support of the United Jewish Appeal’s nationwide campaign. To date, the Women’s Division has raised more than $9,000,000 of the $80,000,000 contributed thus far this year by American Jews for this purpose.
