High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope declared in a half-hour audience today with a joint Jewish delegation that order would definitely be restored, although he was unable to say when.
Declaring that no actions would move the Government’s policy, he assorted that the Jews should not interpret recent events as signs that the authorities were impotent. Sir Arthur expressed appreciation at the restraint of the Jews in the situation.
He announced that collective punishments on Arab communities were being introduced and expressed the hope that the result would be favorable.
Mayor Meier Dizengoff of Tel Aviv insisted that the Government was not taking sufficient action against openly-conducted Arab incitement. He said he was receiving inquiries from abroad on whether Jews were being protected and asked, “What shall we answer?”
M. Zisling, representing the settlements in the Jezreel Valley, emphasized that if the Government did not assure security, the Jewish youth would be forced to help itself but the responsibility would be entirely upon the Government.
Rabbi Moshe Blau of the Agudath Israel, extreme orthodox group, declared that Jewish blood was free for all, citing as examples recent events in Jerusalem and unchecked incendiary speeches by the Mufti.
The delegation was headed by Isaac Ben Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council. Other members were Israel Rokach, vice-mayor of Tel Aviv; Ben-Zion M. Uziel, chief rabbi of Tel Aviv, and M. Butkovsky, of the Jewish Farmers’ Association.
