Wearing religious insignia in French schools soon will become illegal, according to media reports. The Europe 1 radio station reported Wednesday that both French President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin now support legislation that will be “very strict.” Leading left- and right-wing politicians have recently called for a law banning the wearing of crosses, yarmulkes and Muslim scarves in state schools.
