The West Coast region of the Rabbinical Assembly, the association of Conservative rabbis, has unanimously approved an abortion bill now before the California Senate, Rabbi Bert Woythaler of Los Angeles, regional chairman, reported today.
The measure is Senate Bill No. 462, the Therapeutic Abortion Bill. Rabbi Kalman Friedman of Encino, chairman of the regional Conservative Beth Din (Jewish religious court) said that the endorsement was consistent with Jewish Religious Law which recognizes the foetus as a child only in the last few months of its development before birth. The action had been recommended by the regional social actions committee.
