Karl Hermann Knocke, West Germany’s new Ambassador to Israel, presented his credentials to President Zalman Shazar today as a police band played the national anthems of Israel and West Germany. A small and apparently friendly crowd gathered in front of the President’s residence and some of them applauded the German envoy. The occasion was in marked contrast to the similar one three years ago when Ambassador Knocke’s predecessor, Rolf Pauls, the first German Ambassador to Israel, was met by a hostile demonstration.
