The White House will not name an official successor to Myer Feldman as White House staff adviser to President Johnson on matters of Jewish interest, White House sources said today. It was explained that Mr. Feldman, after leaving his White House post as special counsel to the President, would continue to be on call, at the President’s request, to offer advice on issues of interest to the American Jewish community.
It was also explained that Israeli-American relations are now considered normalized to the extent that a continuous White House staff adviser is deemed unnecessary. Problems pertaining to Israel will be referred to the State Department and to McGeorge Bundy, the President’s personal adviser on world security problems in general.
